Title:  Altar of Eden
Author: James Rollins
Genre: Suspense Thriller
Publisher: Harper Collins
Format: Print/Hardcover Edition
Released: 12.29.2009

Book Description:
Following the fall of Baghdad, two Iraqi boys stumble upon armed men looting the city zoo. The floodgates have been opened for the smuggling of hundreds of exotic birds, mammals, and reptiles to Western nations, but this crime hides a deeper secret. Amid a hail of bullets, an underground secret weapons lab is ransacked--and something even more horrific is set free.

Seven years later, Louisiana state veterinarian Lorna Polk stumbles upon a fishing trawler shipwrecked on a barrier island. The crew is missing or dead, but the boat holds a frightening cargo: a caged group of exotic animals, clearly part of a black market smuggling ring.

Yet, something is wrong with these beasts, disturbing deformities that make no sense: a parrot with no feathers, a pair of Capuchin monkeys conjoined at the hip, a jaguar cub with the dentition of a saber-tooth tiger. They also all share one uncanny trait--a disturbingly heightened intelligence.

To uncover the truth about the origin of this strange cargo and the terrorist threat it poses, Lorna must team up with a man who shares a dark and bloody past with her, now an agent of the U.S. Border Patrol, Jack Menard.

Together, the two must hunt for a beast that escaped the shipwreck while uncovering a mystery tied to fractal science and genetic engineering, all to expose a horrifying secret that traces back to mankinds earliest roots.

But can Lorna stop what is about to be born upon the altar of Eden before it threatens not only the world, but also the very foundation of what it means to be human?

Interview with New York Times Best selling author, James Rollins.

CSM: Please help me welcome New York Times Bestselling author , James Rollins to Over the Edge. James, my readers and I are so psyched that you've dropped by to spend some time with us. Thanks so much!

CSM: Tell us more about yourself. Readers love learning new and interesting things about an author, and this would give you a chance to make them feel close.

Well, besides being an author, I'm a veterinarian. I started and ran my own vet hospital in Sacramento, California, for over a decade. I now write full-time, but I still do volunteer work. I currently share my home with a golden retriever, a dachshund, and a lovesick parrot named Igor. I took up writing as a hobby, writing short stories that are now safely buried in my backyard, and eventually got published with my first novel. With my upcoming book (Altar of Eden), I blend the two passion of my life for the first time: veterinary medicine and thriller-writing. I hope you enjoy the result.

CSM: How would readers find out more about you?

The best place to learn more about myself and the books is my website: www.jamesrollins.com. There are videos, interviews, excerpts, and Q&As covering issues ranging from publishing to hobbies.

CSM: What genre(s) do you write?

I write modern thrillers that blend scientific intrigue, romance, and historical mysteries.

CSM: Tell us more about your upcoming HARPER COLLINS release, “Alter of Eden.”

It's what I call the first “veterinary thriller.” The novel features a New Orleans veterinarian, Dr. Lorna Polk, who stumbles upon a smuggling ring that has been experimenting upon exotic animals. To stop them, she must team up with Jack Menard, a border patrol agent who shares a dark history with her. The story is full of adventure, suspense, and explores the redemptive power of love.

CSM: Any new projects, works in progress?

Always. I'm currently finishing up the second book in a children's middle-school series. The first book (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow) was recently short-listed for the Texas Bluebonnet Award and won a Parent's Choice award. I'm also working on the next novel in my Sigma series, titled The Devil Colony.

CSM: I want to take this time to thank you James for stopping by and sharing with my readers and myself a little bit about yourself. This sure has been loads of fun. I hope you enjoyed being here as much as we enjoyed having you.
