THE TIN MAN
But while the villain claims to be heartless, he's not beyond making a mistake. This time he left his prey alive, and ex-homicide detective Nick Lassiter plans to use her to crack the case wide open. Yet Ravyn Skyler is nothing like he expects. She remembers little of the crime, and for a victim, she has a deep reserve of quiet strength. In her eyes he sees both helpless waif and merciless vigilante, and in her kiss he tastes both passion and power. With a tale of a Tin Man, it only seems fair that there's a witch. And the witch guards a secret that threatens not only their lives, but their souls. read more...

Interview with Urban Fantasy author, Alicia Dean.
CSM: Alicia, tell us about your recent release, “HEART OF THE WITCH”.
AD: Heart of the Witch is a paranormal Romantic Suspense published by Dorchester. It’s set in the Oklahoma City area and it’s about Ravyn Skyler, a witch who is attacked by a serial killer, the Tin Man. She survives but the killer gets away. She wants to stop him to prevent him from hurting other women, so she teams up with a broken, wounded alcoholic PI, Nick Lassiter, who is already on the Tin Man case. She has to hide the fact that she’s a witch to keep from endangering her coven. She also has to struggle with her growing attraction to a man who is wrong for her in every way. Added to her problems, her ex-lover, a powerful male witch, wants to possess her and destroy Nick. There’s a kind of cool Wizard of Oz threat throughout the book that was really fun, even though the book itself is pretty dark and creepy.
CSM: If you could compare “HEART OF THE WITCH” to your other books, how would you say it is different?
AD: My other books have been romantic suspense, but this one is a paranormal and it’s perhaps a little more sinister and spooky than the others.
CSM: Which do you think is more important in romance writing, voice or story?
AD: I think they are equally important. If you have a good voice, but your story doesn’t grab the reader, people aren’t going to want to read your stuff. On the other hand, you can have the greatest story of all time, yet if you can’t tell it in a compelling way, your reader won’t stick with you long enough to find out how incredibly awesome your story is.
CSM: Who is your favorite author?
AD: That would be impossible to say. I have read and loved many wonderful writers over the years and I continue to find new ones to add to my collection. I like such a wide array of genres that it might be easier if I picked one favorite out of each genre. But then again, it would still be impossible to narrow it down. When I think of naming just a few, I feel guilty for leaving so many out. My bio on my web site gives a pretty thorough list, although there are countless others I could have added to it.
CSM: Are you a punster or a plotter?
AD: I am definitely a plotter. First thing I do is write a thorough, (although crappy) rough draft of the entire book, plotting as I go. I’ve found that the plot invariably changes as I develop the story, although for the most part, the central issues remain the same.
CSM:Your book covers are amazing. Do you have a say in them?
AD: Thank you. I’m very proud of them. My publishers, both Wild Rose Press and Dorchester, ask for my input, but then the brilliant cover artists use their own talent, combined with what they know about my story, and create these wonderful covers. I have truly been amazed at how well the covers depict my characters and my stories.
CSM: What is next for you and when will readers expect to see it out on bookshelves?
AD: I don’t have anything scheduled for release at the moment, but my agent is currently shopping my latest book, a suspense titled Dead Escape. I’m hoping to learn something on that in the near future.

I agree completely with your wisdom re voice and storytelling. Both are essential.
Don't put me in the draw. I've already read and loved Heart of the Witch - such a gripping story!!
Great interview. Heart of the Witch sounds like a great book. I would love the chance to read it.

Thanks, Jase. It was really fun, in a dark and creepy way. :-)

Bronwyn Storm
I appreciate it, Donna. I hope you get a chance to read it and I certainly hope you enjoye it!
Alicia writes amazing stories. I was hooked from the first time I read "Nothing to Fear" which she has for sale over at www.thewildrosepress.com - if you haven't read it I highly encourage it. I was thrilled to watch the progress of Heart of the Witch from the first draft to publication! So proud of you my friend.
Roni Adams
Hi Alicia,
I thoroughly enjoyed Heart of the Witch also. Tell your agent to hurry up and sell Dead Escape because you have readers eager to read it!
Sounds awesome Alicia! To take two distinct genres and mesh them together so fluidly in a gripping way is amazing. Congratulations on your success and good luck with you next book!
Stacy
Hi Roni...thanks for stopping by and I appreciate your kind words. Especially coming from such a fantastic writer as yourself. Yes, everyone can definitely find more of my titles at Thewildrosepress.com, and a LOT of other great books as well.
Thanks, Bronwyn...you're sweet. Bronwyn's books can also be found at Wild Rose Press and she writes some dandies!
Aw, Diane...from your lips to God's ears! :-) And it wouldn't hurt if the publishers heard that, too. Thanks, dear!
Stacy, I appreciate it. I love both genres so it was natural to try to mesh them. I'm just thrilled to be getting so much positive feedback on my efforts. Hope it worked. :-)
Like Roni, I can attest to the fact that Alicia has great "voice" and knows how to keep you hooked into a story. Especially a creepy one!

FOR EVERYONE WHO COMMENTS after this...I just wanted to let you know that I'll be away from my computer until late tonight. Don't think I'm ignoring you. I'll post tonight or in the morning. Thanks! I'm having so much fun!
This book sounds really interesting!
Hi Alicia,
What's your favorite scene(s) on this book ? :)
I'm so want to read this book, it sounds GREAT !
uniquas at ymail dot com
Hi troughthehaze...thanks for stopping by. It was interesting to write, hope it's interesting to read!
Hello Mariska, thanks! I'm glad you think the book sounds great. Hmmmm, interesting question and you know, you're the first one to ever ask me that. One of my favorite scenes takes place between Ravyn and Nick out by the lake where she's trying to help him heal his heart. Another of my favorites is a scene toward the end where there is a showdown with the Tin Man. I don't want to give away too much, but that one was fun to write. Thanks for posing the question and giving me something to ponder. :-)
This sounds like a great story - I love paranormal romance but add to that the suspense of a murder mystery & I'm sure it's going to be great!

"Heart" is on my Kindle & ready to read on my next trip -- I'm looking forward to it. Keep us posted on the next book coming from your pen!
Hi Sarah...I'm that way myself. Love a paranormal romance, but I really love mystery and suspense, too. :-) Thanks for stopping by.

I stopped by yesterday but don't see my comment posted. :o(
Just wanted to say Heart of the Witch sounds like a great read and I've definitely put it on my TBR list!
Nic
Hi Marianna...thanks for stopping by. I hope you get a chance to read it and I hope you enjoy it!
Hi Martha...will do! Good luck and thanks for stopping by.
Hi Donna...You know, I love the combo, too but it made this book a little difficult to sell. I had one publisher who loved it but didn't know whether to market it as suspense or paranormal so they passed. I'm glad it found a home. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Librarypat...I agree. Most of the stories have to do with vampires, it seems, or werewolved. I love those stories, but I couldnt come up with a new twist on that theme, so I wrote about a witch. I hope you enjoy if you get a chance to read it. Thanks!
Hi Kayla...thanks! Hope you get a chance and I hope you like it.
I couldn't read the post after Kayla's, LOL. But thanks for commenting.
Hi Nicole...thanks so much, dear. Nicole is a fantastic Wild Rose Press author. Check out her books at Thewildrosepress.com. Glad you stopped by...I appreciate the kind words! By the way, I had trouble posting a few times, too. Happy you made it in. :-)
hi! Alicia!
A little question: Do you like latin writers?
blogatlantico@gmail.com
Hello, Liz, I'm not familiar with Latin writers right off hand. Can you name any in particular you're wondering about?. Honestly, I like all writers. :-)
Great interview. I love urban fantasy books. Your book sounds good.

Alicia truly is a fantastic author - one I am always excited to read. Well done!!
Great interview!
Alicia, if you could host a fantasy dinner party who would you invite (deda or alive, real person or fictional cahracter, etc)?
Thanks,
Stella

I like the mix of mystery and paranormal.

Hi Crystal, thanks so much!
Hey, Lori, my friend! So glad you stopped by. You're sweet. Thanks for the kind words.
Hello, Stella. Another interesting question. Most definitely, without a doubt, Elvis Presley would be first on my guest list. Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler. Brett Favre, Dennis Lehane, George Brett, my son so he could meet Brett Favre, my sister so she could meet Elvis. :-) How many people can I invite, because I could go on and on. Thanks for stopping by!
Hello, Anonymous...thanks! It's great to hear that people like that element, especially since that almost prevented it from being published!
Urban fantasy with romance and mystery. What a great combination!
I look forward in reading this.
Thanks,

Sounds like a great book! I wonder why you used the name "Tin Man"? Great title and cover, too!
aj_shedeck@yahoo.com
Hi Linda...so, you used to live in Oklahoma City? Where do you live now? I really enjoyed the opportunity to set a book in my home town. Hope you get a chance to read it and if so, I certainly hope you like it. Thanks for commenting.
Hello Heather...thanks for stopping by. Yes, there are a few Wizard of Oz references and parallels in the book. It was lots of fun, although in a dark and creepy way. :-)
Hello Amber...thanks, glad you like the title and the cover. It's kind of hard to say exactly why I used 'Tin Man' but it was in one of those 'what if' moments, where writers ask themselves questions about their story. I knew I wanted to write a book about a witch and a serial killer. I was thinking, what if he did this or that, then it sort of became, what if he called himself the Tin Man? And, I don't want to give away anything about the book, but there is actually a reason the killer calls himself that. Originally, "Tin Man" was my book title, but my publisher wanted something different. I think they made a good call. Thanks for stopping by!
Oh yeah, paranormal and murder mystery . . . just what I love to read!!! Thanks for stopping by. This is definitely going to be a book I'll go out and get ASAP.

Yes, Wanda, I agree. So many wonderful authors over the years. My love of reading goes way back to when I was very young, so I've run across teriffic authors over the years. On my web site, I name a handful of the ones I love, but it still doesn't get them all. AliciaDean.com. I will put you in the drawing. Thanks!
WOW, I love PI books. This one sounds like a winner. I gotta read it..LOL.. Loved your interview. I like reading little facts about the authors. This way you feel like you know them. Thanks for stopping by and chatting.
